Making a Promo Pak for Your Band

After lots of rehearsal, your band is ready to explode onto the music scene and it's time to let people know who you are and how you sound. This can be accomplished by preparing a professional promo pack.

A "press kit" and a "promo-pack" are essentially the same thing. However, each serves its very own purpose. The press kit is most commonly used to inform the media about an artist. It consists of certain promotional materials that are used by the media to create interesting stories or "write-ups" about an act.

The "promo-pack" is simply a variation of a "press kit." It's used for booking shows, "shopping" for record deals and publishing deals, assembling a management and legal team, and for gaining radio and television airtime.

The only real difference between a "press kit" and a "promo-pack" are some of the items included in each, and to whom they're sent to. All of the contents are put together in attractive looking folders which include artwork or the artists' logo on them.

A typical press kit contains the following items...

  • The artist's biography

  • A photo of the artist/band

  • A fact sheet

  • "Write-ups and/or press releases

A typical promo-pack contains all of the above items as well as...

  • A demo tape/CD (3-5 of your best songs!)

  • A song list

  • A lyric sheet

Be sure to include your copyright and contact information on ALL of your press kit and promo-pack items!

  1. Get a binder with pockets and brads. Put an 8 by 10 glossy photo of the band inside. The photo should contain the band's name, website address, and a contact phone number. Most digital photo editing software will allow you to do this yourself, or you can pay a professional.
  2. Get a logo for your band name. People are visually oriented. Making sure your logo is eye catching goes a long way toward getting them to remember your name.
  3. Include a demo CD of at least 3 songs. Extra effort should be made here to ensure that the CD is a quality recording. Be consistent and imprint the same branding of your band name and logo on the CD. Be sure to include your website and phone number on it.
  4. Include a business card, with the same branding and logo and the same contact information.
  5. Prepare bios on each band member. Write as though you are speaking to a friend and use humor as much as possible.
  6. If you are a cover band, provide an accurate song list of the material you play. If you play all originals, provide some explanation of your compositions, including how you wrote or produced them.
  7. Include a few extra photos from some of your live performances. Not just of your band performing, but of audience members dancing, clapping and having a great time.
